    International audienceThis paper sets out to adduce visual evidence for Kroneckerian finitism by making perspicuous some of the insights that buttress Kronecker's conception of arithmetization as a process aiming at disclosing the arithmetical essence enshrined in analytical formulas, by spotting discrete patterns through algorithmic fine-tuning. In the light of a fairly tractable case study, it is argued that Kronecker's main tenet in philosophy of mathematics is not so much an ontological as a methodological one, inasmuch as highly demanding requirements regarding mathematical understanding prevail over mere preemptive reductionism to whole numbers

    Mechanical Properties of End-crosslinked Entangled Polymer Networks using Sliplink Brownian Dynamics Simulations

    The mechanical properties of a polymeric network containing both crosslinks and sliplinks (entanglements) are studied using a multi-chain Brownian dynamics simulation. We coarse-grain at the level of chain segments connecting consecutive nodes (cross- or sliplinks), with particular attention to the Gaussian statistics of the network. Affine displacement of nodes is not imposed: their displacement as well as sliding of monomers through sliplinks is governed by force balances. The simulation results of stress in uniaxial extension and the full stress tensor in simple shear including the (non-zero) second normal stress difference are presented for monodisperse chains with up to 18 entanglements between two crosslinks. The cases of two different force laws of the subchains (Gaussian chains and chains with finite extensibility) for two different numbers of monomers in a subchain (no = 50 and no = 100) are examined. It is shown that the additivity assumption of slip- and crosslink contribution holds for sufficiently long chains with two or more entanglements, and that it can be used to construct the strain response of a network of infinitely long chains. An important consequence is that the contribution of sliplinks to the small-strain shear modulus is about ⅔ of the contribution of a crosslink

    Spontaneous Stratification in Granular Mixtures

    Granular materials size segregate when exposed to external periodic perturbations such as vibrations. Moreover, mixtures of grains of different sizes spontaneously segregate in the absence of external perturbations: when a mixture is simply poured onto a pile, the large grains are more likely to be found near the base, while the small grains are more likely to be near the top. Here, we report a spontaneous phenomenon arising when we pour a mixture between two vertical plates: the mixture spontaneously stratifies into alternating layers of small and large grains whenever the large grains are rougher than the small grains. In contrast, we find only spontaneous segregation when the large grains are more rounded than the small grains. The stratification is related to the occurrence of avalanches; during each avalanche the grains comprising the avalanche spontaneously stratify into a pair of layers through a "kink" mechanism, with the small grains forming a sublayer underneath the layer of large grains.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, http://polymer.bu.edu/~hmakse/Home.htm

    Survey of T-2 and HT-2 toxins by LC–MS/MS in oats and oat products from European oat mills in 2005–2009

    T-2 and HT-2 toxins were analysed in oats (n = 243), oat flakes (n = 529), oat meal (n = 105) and oat by-products (n = 209) from 11 European mills during 2005–2009 by high-performance liquid chromatography with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. Limits of quantification were 5 ÎŒg kg−1 for both T-2 and HT-2 toxins in oats. The incidence of T-2 + HT-2 (> 5 ÎŒg kg−1) in oats, oat flakes, oat meal and oat by-products was 93, 77, 34 and 99%, respectively. The mean values of T-2 + HT-2 were 94, 17, 11 and 293 ÎŒg kg−1 for oats, oat flakes, oat meal and oat by-products, respectively. T-2 and HT-2 occurred together and the T-2 level was 52% of HT-2 in oats. Maximal T-2 and HT-2 concentration in oat flakes and oat meal were 197 and 118 ÎŒg kg−1. The toxins were reduced by 82–88% during processing, but increased 3.1 times in oat by-products

    Scale invariance and universality of force networks in static granular matter

    Force networks form the skeleton of static granular matter. They are the key ingredient to mechanical properties, such as stability, elasticity and sound transmission, which are of utmost importance for civil engineering and industrial processing. Previous studies have focused on the global structure of external forces (the boundary condition), and on the probability distribution of individual contact forces. The disordered spatial structure of the force network, however, has remained elusive so far. Here we report evidence for scale invariance of clusters of particles that interact via relatively strong forces. We analyzed granular packings generated by molecular dynamics simulations mimicking real granular matter; despite the visual variation, force networks for various values of the confining pressure and other parameters have identical scaling exponents and scaling function, and thus determine a universality class. Remarkably, the flat ensemble of force configurations--a simple generalization of equilibrium statistical mechanics--belongs to the same universality class, while some widely studied simplified models do not.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures; to appear in Natur

    Rural to Urban Migration and Changes in Cardiovascular risk Factors in Tanzania: A Prospective Cohort Study.

    High levels of rural to urban migration are a feature of most African countries. Our aim was to investigate changes, and their determinants, in cardiovascular risk factors on rural to urban migration in Tanzania. Men and women (15 to 59 years) intending to migrate from Morogoro rural region to Dar es Salaam for at least 6 months were identified. Measurements were made at least one week but no more than one month prior to migration, and 1 to 3 monthly after migration. Outcome measures included body mass index, blood pressure, fasting lipids, and self reported physical activity and diet. One hundred and three men, 106 women, mean age 29 years, were recruited and 132 (63.2%) followed to 12 months. All the figures presented here refer to the difference between baseline and 12 months in these 132 individuals. Vigorous physical activity declined (79.4% to 26.5% in men, 37.8% to 15.6% in women, p < 0.001), and weight increased (2.30 kg men, 2.35 kg women, p < 0.001). Intake of red meat increased, but so did the intake of fresh fruit and vegetables. HDL cholesterol increased in men and women (0.24, 0.25 mmoll-1 respectively, p < 0.001); and in men, not women, total cholesterol increased (0.42 mmoll-1, p = 0.01), and triglycerides fell (0.31 mmoll-1, p = 0.034). Blood pressure appeared to fall in both men and women. For example, in men systolic blood pressure fell by 5.4 mmHg, p = 0.007, and in women by 8.6 mmHg, p = 0.001. The lower level of physical activity and increasing weight will increase the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. However, changes in diet were mixed, and may have contributed to mixed changes in lipid profiles and a lack of rise in blood pressure. A better understanding of the changes occurring on rural to urban migration is needed to guide preventive measures

    Survival of head and neck cancer cells relies upon LZK kinase- mediated stabilization of mutant p53

    Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) includes epithelial cancers of the oral and nasal cavity, larynx, and pharynx and accounts for ~350,000 deaths/year worldwide. Smoking- related HNSCC is associated with few targetable mutations but is defined by frequent copy number alteration, the most common of which is gain at 3q. Critical 3q target genes have not been conclusively determined for HNSCC. Here we present data indicating that MAP3K13 (encoding LZK) is an amplified driver gene in HNSCC. Copy number gain at 3q resulted in increased MAP3K13 mRNA in HNSCC tumor samples and cell lines. Silencing LZK reduced cell viability and proliferation of HNSCC cells with 3q gain but not control cell lines. Inducible silencing of LZK caused near complete loss of colony-forming ability in cells harboring 3q gain. These results were validated in vivo by evidence that LZK silencing was sufficient to reduce tumor growth in a xenograft model of HNSCC. Our results establish LZK as critical for maintaining expression of mutant stabilized p53
